A "conversation" counts when a visitor sends their first message. All subsequent messages within that same conversation are free — whether it's 3 messages or 30.
Here's how the limit system works:At 80% of your limit — you receive a heads-up alert via email and Slack. On the Starter plan, this means after 240 conversations. This gives you time to decide whether to purchase a top-up before you run out.
At 100% of your limit — Kilo pauses new conversations. The widget stops appearing for new visitors until you either top up or your billing cycle resets. Active conversations that are already in progress can continue.
If you're having a high-traffic month (maybe you launched a campaign or got featured in the press), you can purchase additional conversations without waiting for your next billing cycle.
Go to Account > Billing in your dashboard.
Click "Top up."
Choose how many conversation packs you need (sold in packs of 100).
Confirm the purchase.
Top-up pricing depends on your plan:Starter: $150 per 100 conversations ($1.50 each)
Growth: $100 per 100 conversations ($1.00 each)
Top-up conversations don't expire at the end of the billing cycle — they carry over until used.
"Can I switch plans mid-cycle?" Yes. Upgrading takes effect immediately and you're prorated for the remainder of the billing period. Downgrading takes effect at the start of your next billing cycle.
"What happens if I cancel?" Your widget stops appearing and no new conversations are processed. Your data (conversations, settings, knowledge base) is preserved for 30 days in case you decide to resubscribe.
